Nu Skin Vertical Garden: A Living Masterpiece by Mingzhu Nerval

2014-05-18

At Mingzhu Nerval, we believe that a vertical garden is more than a collection of plants—it’s a living, evolving piece of art. One year after installation, the Nu Skin vertical garden in Shanghai has fully embraced its surroundings, revealing a design that looks as if it was always meant to be there. With each passing season, the plants have grown, colors have deepened, and textures have come to life, transforming this green wall into a masterpiece that mirrors untouched nature. As it runs along a staircase, this installation invites visitors on a journey—one that celebrates both growth and perseverance, much like the words of Langston Hughes’ timeless poem.

This living green wall, designed by Mingzhu Nerval, has transformed over time into a breathtaking vertical garden masterpiece, proving that nature, when integrated into architecture, becomes timeless art.

As this vertical garden runs along a staircase, and to celebrate its beauty, hopefully we can dedicate it this poem (‘Mother to Son’ by Langston Hughes):

Well, son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
It’s had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor—
Bare.
But all the time
I’se been a-climbin’ on,
And reachin’ landin’s,
And turnin’ corners,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
Where there ain’t been no light.
So boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t you set down on the steps
’Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall now—
For I’se still goin’, honey,
I’se still climbin’,
And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
