Currently under construction, the Grand Canal Museum will be nestled on the banks of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in Hangzhou.
The architectural design by Herzog & de Meuron preserves the largest possible expanse of ground and rooftop space, creating a canvas for gardens and landscapes.

The landscape design is closely integrated with the canal’s water system, employing the principles of water-sensitive urban design to minimize the site’s impact on the aquatic environment.
The softscape design reflects the diverse local microclimates and recreates distinct Hangzhou landscapes—forests, fields, urban gardens, and tea plantations—in the museum.
