Creating a Secret Garden: Mingzhu Nerval’s Biophilic Design for Bloom Restaurant
2019-04-14
A Secret Garden in the City
At Bloom Restaurant in the heart of Shanghai’s Jing’An district, Mingzhu Nerval designed a lush, immersive secret garden—an escape hidden behind a discreet street entrance.
Blending biophilic design with luxury landscape architecture, our vision was to create a sensory-rich dining experience where nature and hospitality intertwine. From flowering vines and fruit trees to a centuries-old olive tree and sculptural Chinese pine, each element was carefully chosen to balance cultural symbolism, botanical artistry, and ecological performance.
“Our expertise in biophilic restaurant design allowed us to craft a unique experience for Bloom’s visitors, where nature seamlessly intertwines with culinary artistry.”
Inside, a towering 25-meter vertical garden brings life to the interior, surrounded by edible herbs and seasonal foliage—many of which are harvested by the chefs themselves. This is hospitality landscape design elevated: bold, beautiful, and alive.
More than a one-time installation, Mingzhu Nerval continues to maintain this living artwork—ensuring long-term health, color, and harmony in every leaf and branch. Bloom is not just a restaurant—it’s a story told in greenery.
